FOF didn’t look like them self.
Now they do

For years, FOF was larger, louder, and far more alive than the identity it carried around.
And to anyone outside Denmark: FOF is not a school. It’s a civic engine. A place where people come together to learn, create, and explore — pottery, politics, languages, philosophy, you name it. One of the last public spaces where age, algorithms and worldviews don’t matter. A practical, everyday piece of social cohesion in a country that is slowly forgetting how valuable that is.

Yet their visual identity looked like something forgotten in a government drawer from the 1990s. Pastoral. Soft edged and without a pulse. A design looking backwards, while the organisation was moving in every possible direction: 16,000 activities. 20 local chapters. Thousands of people in constant motion, from pottery to choir practice, from geopolitics to Pilates.

This isn’t a system. It’s an organism.

When you work with a flat, highly animated organisation, you cannot impose a design regime from above. Identity has to be something people want to wear — something that leaves room, and through its elasticity is easier to get right than wrong.

Identity doesn’t begin with design components. It begins with choosing a personality. We developed a set of visual personalities — different ways FOF could see itself and appear in the world — and let the organisation try them on. Once you’ve worn an identity, it becomes painfully obvious which ones are right, and which ones never will be. From there, the form almost chooses itself.

A circle as anchor. Everything else in motion.

The hardest kind of renewal is not becoming new. It is becoming yourself.

The evening school is alive. Now the identity is too.
